Ways to counter a sluggish digestion

Digestive system is one of the most essential and vital parts of the body and for the entire body to work well, the digestive system must function well. The entire metabolism depends highly on the digestive system and its improper function may lead to various health related problems.
As we know, digestion actually begins in the mouth when we chew; here are few suggestions on eating habits to improve the digestion.


Chew your food well and eat at a moderate pace. Ideally, you should chew each mouthful some 30 times ( soft foods – 5 to 10 times , dense foods – up to 30times ) , breaking the food into small particles and allowing the salivary enzymes to begin their work digesting the food.

Eat in a peaceful and relaxed environment to smoothen the digestion.

Eat fruit between meals.

Eat simple meals of just two or three different foods.

Prefer hot water and hot herbal teas . Hot water is an excellent way to detoxify the body and build digestive strength. Simmering a few slices of ginger root in boiling water makes a ginger root tea that stimulates digestion. Ginger in food has the same effect, as does candied ginger root eaten after meals. Other herbs that promote good digestion and make excellent herbal teas are chamomile, peppermint, and cinnamon.

Eat freshly cooked foods which the most nourishing and are free of molds or staleness.

Sit still and relax a few minutes after eating.


Avoid watching television, reading, working, or arguing with others when you eat.

Mixing many different types of foods should be avoided as it taxes the digestive system.

Avoid overeating as it burdens the entire digestive system. Ayurveda recommends consuming the amount of food that will fit into two cupped hands at any meal.

Digestion can also be improved by following the top 10 exercises,

Walking and Jogging – Really there is no better means of exercising casually than walking.

One can practice morning and/or evening walks according to their work schedule.

Cycling – The main advantage of cycling, as walking is that it is simple, easy to learn, easy to practice and can be performed at a convenient hour of the day. It strengthens the calf muscles and is a great way of exercising for digestion. ( Note : People with knee pain can restrict cycling )

Yoga – is basically a sequence of postures, scientifically proven and designed to work on specific targeted parts of the body for its well-being.

Sit-ups – Sit ups are very very effective as far as exercising is concerned and a simple method to maintain a good digestive system.

Digestive Breathing – Although not known to many, digestive breathing can be made use of in improving several parts of the digestive system like larynx, the pharynx etc.

Push-Ups – Push-Ups are essentially abdominal movements using the arms as a force.

Stretching – Stretching of the abdominal muscles help a lot in this regard.

Abdominal Muscle Movement – Exercising of the abdominal muscles form a vital part of any digestive exercise.
